Sleep Training - Ferber Method - Night 5

Two steps forward, 1 step back.

Last night was kind of a bad night. Not compared to her waking up 6+ times like she did in our pre-ferber days, but compared to our new standard it wasn't great.

Fifth night intervals - 7, 9, 11

8:00 pm - Lillian went down without any tears.

8:30 pm - Lillian woke up, went in after her first interval, replaced the paci and she fell right asleep.

10:30 pm - Lillian woke up, went in after her first interval, replaced the paci and she fell back asleep

2:20 am - Lillian woke up, went in after her first interval, replaced the paci and she fell back asleep

4:45 - Lillian woke up. Checked on her at 7 minutes, 9 minutes and she fell asleep during her 11 minute interval. I was really tempted to just pick her up and put her in my bed because I was really tired. But I resisted and she finally fell back asleep.

A couple of things I've noticed:
- Lilllin seems to sleep better on her stomach. I may just start putting her down that way because half the flailing around seems to be her trying to get onto her stomach when she wakes up on her back.
- I recently started putting her in Pampers Dry Max diapers to go to bed. I think these keep her drier and I wonder if the fussiness last night related to her being put to bed in her normal Pampers Swaddlers.
- I need to get a normal sound machine because I think the sleep sheep turning off isn't helping matters. Ferber actually would probably say to eliminate things like a sound machine, but we usually keep her door cracked and the sound echos in the house too much to not have something on in her room.
- I need to get a night light for her room because leaving the bathroom light on puts too much light in the room, but its pitch black if we don't have anything on and I can't see when I go in an sooth her.

I promise I won't keep these updates going for too much longer. It's just helpful for me to be able to look back and see how we've progressed.

as a fellow ferberer these updates are awesome. So glad to see it working for you guys too.

I agree that Ferber would probably shake his head at us for the sound machines, but we use them and love them too.

I ended up giving the kids my iPod Nano and I got a shuffle for myself, which was actually a selfish $49 upgrade since I wanted a smaller iPod to run with. Anyway, Joe picked us up a sound dock from Marshalls - this one: http://www.amazon.com/iLuv-Speaker-System-Sound-Black/dp/B000XB5VUA

We scored it for $15 and then just bought an ocean waves CD off of iTunes. I leave the "CD" on repeat all night long and for naps.

HTH!

Ok so we put a nightlight in Thatcher's room and it totally helps. Definitely agree on that one.

You know I know close to nothing about anything BUT the one thing I just noticed in all of those intervals is the paci. Can you try putting her down without it? How depending is she on it? I 100% agree that it is totally fine to leave some of the associations BUT the one thing Ferber does say is that this is how parents get into annoying habits like replacing the paci all night :)

It's tough to know b/c if the paci soothes her than why take it away but just throwing it out there b/c the pattern that emerged when I read that was that she's waiting for you to give her the paci and then she falls asleep...so if she didn't have the paci OR if she were reassured but not given the paci, maybe it would help? No idea, just throwing it out there!

As for the Sleep Sheep, I agree that too much quiet is eerie as well. We took it away but the house is a little too quiet now! I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with sleep machines - especially if you think noise is waking her up (we tip toe around the kitchen, too - ha!)

1, You're doing awesome.
2, Graco offers the sleep machine that you can do waves, music, or connect to ipod for $29.99 in my company store. I can ship it to you tomorrow, worth way more than that and there is nothing wrong with sound machines. I'm 29 and need a fan on in my room, end of discussion.
3, Personal opinion is not to abandon the passy and that porr Lil is just adjusting to the new regime. She is trying to bust back into your bed as she clearly had subconscious realization of the change. STAY STRONG!!!!
4, These updates are great!
